The 52nd Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta which is taking place from October 5–13, 2024, is the world’s largest hot air ballooning event and one of the most photographed gatherings globally. This annual celebration draws nearly a million visitors to Balloon Fiesta Park in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to witness a vibrant display of balloons in every color and shape. Though the Albuquerque Fiesta is the best-known hot air ballooning activity across New Mexico. The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta began in 1972 as part of 770 KOB Radio’s 50th-anniversary celebrations, featuring a race between 13 hot air balloons. Over the years, it has grown into the world’s largest balloon festival, now attracting around 600 balloons and 700 pilots. Now held annually in early October at Balloon Fiesta Park, the event spans nine days and is a major attraction in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
How to become a part of the event?
To participate in the 2024 Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, you can either join a balloon crew as a volunteer or book a balloon ride through one of the organizations offering the experience. As a member of the chase crew, you’ll help with laying out, inflating, and launching the balloon, then follow it by vehicle to its landing site. This process typically takes up most of the morning and part of the afternoon. While volunteering multiple times can improve your chances of getting a balloon ride, it ultimately depends on the pilot’s decision. When to arrive at the event?
The festivities usually begin at 6 AM or earlier each day, while some events start as early as 4:30 AM. Similarly, most days end with an 8:00 PM fireworks show, but some wrap up earlier in the afternoon.

Each day of the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta starts with the Dawn Patrol, where a few balloons take off to assess flying conditions before the larger mass ascension. Skydivers also make a dramatic descent to the launch site.
In the evenings, the Twinkle Twinkle Glow event lights up the night as hundreds of balloons are inflated but remain grounded, glowing like lanterns against the dark sky. This spectacle is paired with a fiery descent of skydivers and a grand Afterglow Fireworks display.
At daybreak, the Morning Glow begins, when balloons are inflated but stay grounded, illuminating the early morning as the sky brightens. The main highlight of the fiesta is the Mass Ascension, where hundreds of balloons launch in waves, rising together in a stunning, synchronized display as the dawn light fills the sky.

In October, celebrate the harvest at El Rancho de las Golondrinas in New Mexico during the 52nd Annual Harvest Festival on October 5-6, 2024. Experience living history by tasting syrup from a burro-powered sorghum mill, pressing apples for cider, and picking pumpkins from a scarecrow-guarded patch. Children can enjoy hands-on activities like grape stomping, making corn husk dolls, and rolling their own tortillas by hand.

Tips before visiting the event
Morning temperatures at the Balloon Fiesta Park are around 40°F, so dress in layers and bring a jacket.
As the day progresses, temperatures will rise to about 70°F by noon.
Bring a camera (either standalone or a phone camera) to capture the vibrant and captivating hot air balloons.
The Balloon Fiesta is the most photographed event in the world due to the colorful, diverse balloons and stunning morning scenery.
Pack water to stay hydrated, and for evening events, bring a flashlight.
It will be dark upon early morning arrival, but sunshine will follow soon after.
